The San Gabriel Academy story began in 1933, when an elementary school program was started by the Alhambra SDA Church. Four years later the school moved to its present location, and other churches joined the effort. In 1947, it became the San Gabriel Union School. The school was enlarged in 1954, with the purchase of adjoining land and the addition of an auditorium and classrooms. High school classes were added to the curriculum, starting with the ninth grade in 1955. The first twelfth-grade class graduated in 1960, with eight members. Additional classroom buildings were added in 1972. In 1989, an additional classroom complex was completed that houses a science lab, computer lab, domestic living lab, choral room, and six classrooms. There are also four small houses on campus that accommodate the administrative offices, registrar offices, music facilities, and maintenance department.

The publications at SGA all have a theme.  It started with the school's logo, which originally carried the "Lamp of Learning."  From there, the yearbook was born and named "El Fuego," Spanish for "The Fire." The Principal's Monthly Newsletter is "El Faro" or "The Light," the school's newspaper is called "The Torch," the student's daily newsletter is called, "The Hotline," and the Alumni newsletter is called simply, "Embers."  You can see that we have carried this theme throughout the history of San Gabriel Academy.

Through the years, SGA has provided unusually outstanding Christian education to thousands of alumni.  Today, with the debut of its laptop computer program, SGA continues to remain on the outstanding list of schools preparing students for skills needed in the 21st century and more importantly, for eternity.
